Why Not?

So everyone's been asking, "Why did you leave Shell?" The search for answers began a little over a year ago on a 767 to Europe. I took a few sips of my very tasty beverage and begin sketching on the cocktail napkin.

The greatest gift Shell gave me was the ability to...

  • Think about what I want.
  • Say what I want.
  • Write down what I want.
All I had to do was go for it. In most large companies, most people play it safe. I took personal risks on myself and others and every time I learned, grew and it paid all sorts of dividends.  I also figured out the opposite: What I didn't want.
Steve Jobs once said....Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma – which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of other’s opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.
So why did I decide to go?  It was time to make a difference, elsewhere...to do something I felt I needed to do..  Am I afraid to fail?  Nope.  Failure is one the gifts of the game of life.  And who could resist the opportunity to help shape and change a company, its culture, the industry and the world's view of it. Going to BP is going to be a rewarding experience.
What are you doing to make a dent in the universe?
Can you think about it, say it, and write it down and then go do it?
Hurry - the world needs your brilliance !
